There have been reports of recent sightings of a young black bear in Warren County.  We have contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife and camp staff are complying with the ODNR’s recommendations regarding precautions.  While these precautions specifically relate to bear sightings, they also reinforce our standard practices as they relate to the natural setting in which our camps are located.

The Girl Scouts’ primary concern is always the health and safety of the girls we serve.  All activities are planned and carried out in accordance with program standards and guidelines established by Girl Scouts of the USA, which are designed to safeguard the well-being of both girl and adult members.  In addition, the American Camp Association (ACA) is an independent national agency which imposes the highest standards of health, safety, program, and staffing for camps across the country. Camps are periodically visited and must maintain high marks to display the ACA logo. We are proud that all council-owned properties providing summer opportunities by paid staff are accredited and meet or exceed ACA standards.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce the 2009 season of camping for Girl Scouts of Western Ohio! At Girl Scout camp, each girl has the opportunity to thrive in an environment where she learns new skills and experiences a growth in confidence, all while having fun and spending time making new friends.

Now more than ever before, camp opportunities abound for girls throughout western Ohio. Through the camp community, Girl Scouts has a special opportunity to encourage girls in an environment away from the pressures of their everyday lives. Girls who attend camp say they learn how to be their best and treat others with respect. They also learn valuable decision-making and teambuilding skills.

We are proud to offer girls a place to discover, learn, and most of all, have fun in a friendly, safe atmosphere. The safety of our girl members at camp, as in every aspect of Girl Scouting, is of utmost importance. For that reason, all Girl Scouts of Western Ohio camp staff members undergo extensive training to ensure that girls have a safe and memorable camp experience.

Please review these opportunities with your camper to find the camp experience that fits her unique personality and interests. Last summer, many girls took the opportunity to explore camps beyond their regional boundaries; we hope you’ll encourage your camper to do the same. We hope that your camper will make new friends across Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. Through Girl Scout camp, she is certain to enjoy an enriching summer filled with activities and experiences designed to build her courage, confidence, and character!
